Funding Partnerships

EHF plays an important adviser role to the funding community that invests in chemically-related initiatives and organizations. During the organization’s history, EHF has consulted with several national foundations, leveraging tens of millions of dollars in a coordinated strategy to empower a diverse set of NGOs to collaborate on a suite of synergistic campaign goals.

EHF developed a visual map and companion narrative of the emerging environmental health movement to help both NGOs and funders see how their work related to others in the field and to catalyze deeper, more coordinated engagements.

Through its foundation adviser role and active participation in the Health and Environmental Funders Network (HEFN), EHF encouraged collaboration and synergy among the funding community to match the increased collaboration in the NGO community on environmental health issues.

Currently, EHF, through Gary Cohen and Monica Buckhorn, consult with foundations on chemical policy and market campaigns that are working together to phase out persistent and bio-accumulative toxins (PBTs) from commerce. Additionally, EHF has monitored foundation investments with the eight state coalitions of The State Alliance for Federal Chemicals Policy Reform (known as SAFER) since the campaign’s inception in 2005.

Internationally, EHF maintains an informal consultative role on chemical safety funding issues with both the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Development Programme. EHF has leveraged over 20 million dollars to support more than 250 NGOs around the world to demonstrate nondestruction technologies and other best practices.

The combination of coordinating NGO environmental health campaigns and linking philanthropic resources with these overarching efforts allows EHF to play a major role in the unfolding strategy of global environmental health issues related to chemicals and health.
